About Me:
Hi! I live in London but I’m from Leeds and am a big fan of the Yorkshire Dales. I spend my free time crocheting, cheerleading, and going to the theatre!

I always try to make the most of living in London, so I go see shows as often as I can. I love musicals, theatre, concerts, comedy shows… everything! When I want to relax I pick up my crocheting. At the moment I am making a wolf teddy, but my favourite thing to make is dinosaurs. I do cheerleading with the University team- we go compete against other Universities. Before I started cheerleading I did gymnastics, and I am a qualified gymnastics teacher.
Whenever I go back to Leeds I love to go for big walks- something I miss in London. I really like walking in forests or around lakes.

My Work:
I am a PhD student, working on Quantum Computing! This means I am working on building a new type of computer using quantum physics, which will be able to complete tasks impossible on a regular computer!

Quantum physics is the physics of really really small things, like atoms, electrons- and my favourite- particles of light (these are called photons). In my research these photons are how the computer stores information. This is like how a regular computer stores information in “bits”- in quantum computing we instead use “qubits”. Right now we don’t have very big or powerful quantum computers. Instead, we have small quantum devices which can do some tasks really well but there is a lot they can’t do. I’m trying to make these small quantum devices work better by getting rid of any errors in them. The more errors we have, the worse the quantum device works and then there isn’t any point in using a quantum device instead of a regular one.

My Typical Day:
In a normal day I get to the office around 9am and spend the morning reading papers, working on code, and writing up any research I have done. I then have lunch in the University common room, before either coming back to the office or going to the lab to do experiments. I leave around 6pm and like to see friends in the evening.

Some days I spend time in group meetings, where people in my research group share ideas and help each other. It is always really useful to get other people’s opinions on my work. I also do some work for other groups on campus- I am involved in a group which connects women PhD students on campus and we are currently organising a start of the year event. I’m also a member of the optical society, which invites speakers to talk about different things they do with light. Finally, I am a postgraduate physics rep, which means that people can come to me if they have any problems in the department or want something to change.

What I'd do with the prize money:
With the prize money, I would organise STEM engagement specifically targeting getting women into STEM. I would host talks and workshops across all age groups to show that STEM isn’t scary and can be for everyone!

Education:
I went to school in Leeds for my GCSEs and my A levels. This was where I first learnt any science and where I decided I wanted to work in Quantum Computing.
I then went to Lancaster University for my undergraduate degree. Lancaster was so much fun and I learnt about physics in a lot more detail than I had at school.
I then went to Imperial College London for my masters degree. Here I was able to study specifically quantum physics and quantum computing, and I learnt all the things I needed for my particular career path. It was also here that I decided I didn’t want to be a theorist, I wanted to work in a lab.
I am now at Imperial College London for my PhD.

Qualifications:
For my GCSEs I did English Literature, English Language, Maths, Double Science, Geography, Latin, Religious Studies, Computer Science, and German.
For my A levels I did Physics, Computer Science, Maths, and Further Maths.
For my undergraduate degree I did BSc Theoretical Physics.
For my masters degree I did MSc Physics with Quantum Dynamics.
-
Work History:
When I was at school and at University I taught gymnastics to children in primary school. I have also spent time doing internships in website development and design.
-
Current Job:
I am currently doing a PhD in quantum computing. This is kind of like a cross between a regular job and being a student. I still am at a University, but I get paid and am a lot more independent. I do my own research and have to learn things by myself instead of getting taught them.
