I like my job well enough, but I’d retire tonight if I could afford it. Some people work to live and others live to work. Both are valid, but I’m the former.
I say this especially because I think the advice I heard a lot growing up set unachievable expectations for what a career should be. “Do your dream job” doesn’t apply to those of us who don’t dream of employment, nor does “do a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”.
Everyone’s different, but if you’re anything like me, you should look for a job:
1. You’re good at
2. Pays enough to cover your needs
3. Doesn’t burn you out (i.e. leaves you with enough energy to enjoy life)
4. Makes the world better, or at least not actively worse
